Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROL : Roll Over Beethoven
"Roll Over Beethoven" is a 1956 hit single by Chuck Berry, notable as one of the earliest definitive rock and roll recordings. It was later covered by The Beatles for the album With the Beatles, with the usually lead guitarist George Harrison taking the role of lead vocalist. It was also covered by the Electric Light Orchestra, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Sonics, Status Quo, and Uriah Heep on Uriah Heep Live. The name is a reference to composer Ludwig van Beethoven and the arrival of rock and roll into the mainstream. In 2003, Berry's single was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.
