Rolls-Royce AE 1107C-Liberty

Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROL : Rolls-Royce AE 1107C-Liberty

The Rolls-Royce AE 1107C-Liberty (also known as Allison T406) is a turboshaft engine which powers the Boeing V-22 Osprey. The unique tiltrotor Osprey is due to enter service with the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy. The engine delivers 6,000 shp (4,470 kW).

The AE1107C-Liberty shares a common core with the AE 3007 and AE 2100 series of engines.

When installed in the V-22, the AE 1107C Liberty powerplants are housed in wing-tip tilting nacelles—allowing the distinctive flight characteristics of the V-22. For take off and landing the nacelles are directed vertically (90° to fuselage), whilst for forward flight they are rotated parallel to fuselage. The engine is now also being considered as a cost-effective upgrade for existing heavylift helicopter assets such as the CH-47 Chinook and CH-53 Super Stallion.
