Roseburg is a city in state of Oregon [Geographic references#6GR6], USA. This city was named for Aaron Rose, who settled within the current city limits September 23, 1851, and managed a tavern. The population was 20,017 at the 2000 census. Roseburg is home to Umpqua Community College.

Transportation

Oregon Highway 99 runs through downtown Roseburg as the main north-south arterial. Interstate 5 runs along the west side of the city, across the South Umpqua River from downtown.

Oregon Highway 138 runs northwest from Roseburg to Elkton, Oregon, and generally east from Roseburg to its terminus at a junction with U.S. Highway 97, just east of Diamond Lake and Crater Lake.

There is a Greyhound bus station with connecting service to Amtrak passenger rail service. A Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad freight railway runs through Roseburg, and there is a municipal airport at the north end of town.

Geography

Roseburg is located at [43°13′5″N, 123°21′22″W] (43.217964, -123.356047)[Geographic references#1GR1]. Roseburg sits near the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork of the Umpqua River. By car, it is 67 miles (108 kilometers) south on I-5 from Eugene.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²). 23.9 km² (9.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (2.02%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 20,017 people, 8,237 households, and 5,098 families residing in the city. The population density was 838.2/km² (2,171.1/mi²). There were 8,838 housing units at an average density of 370.1/km² (958.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.56% White, 0.30% African American, 1.30% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 2.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.73% of the population.

There were 8,237 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.1% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $40,172. Males had a median income of $32,624 versus $25,707 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,082. About 11.0% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.9% of those under age 18 and 9.2% of those age 65 or over.

Weather

Roseburg winters are cool with rarely much freezing. Although there tends to be a significant amount of rainfall, which provides blossom filled springs with many vibrant colors. A warming trend begins in April and May, continuing into the summery days of July and August. Fall weather is pleasant and crisp, producing brilliant leaf colors in late October.

Roseburg is a part of the hundred valleys of the Umpqua. You can climb a mountain, raft a river or catch a salmon in some of the most picturesque areas of the Pacific Northwest. It is a part of a water wonderland crowned by the world famous Umpqua River. The gentle climate creates limitless recreational opportunities among lush forests and cascading waterfalls. With a low population and few people per square mile, Roseburg has many unspoiled areas to explore.

The lakes, rivers and reservoirs of Douglas County provide wonderful boating and fishing settings, especially on the beautiful North Umpqua, a river that's famous among fishermen. The North Umpqua offers fishing opportunities for trout, salmon, bass, and is one of the world's only rivers with a native run of summer steelhead. In the summertime, it is extremely common for many people to raft and spend their time by the North Umpqua.

Attractions

Applegate Trail

The Applegate Trail passed through Southern Oregon along the route of present day Main Street in Roseburg. An Historical Marker is located on Main Street just north of Douglas Avenue. The Applegate Trail, sometimes referred to as the Southern Road, was opened in 1846. It was intended to serve as an alternate way of reaching the western valleys of the Oregon Territory while avoiding the perils of the Oregon Trail along the Columbia River route. The Applegate Trail remained in use until well into the 1880's.

Art Galleries

Numerous art galleries can be found in Roseburg and the Central Douglas County area. Local artists are featured along with special exhibits of regional and national art work. In Roseburg the Umpqua Valley Arts Center and Gift Gallery is located in the restored Old Soldiers Home, and serves as a regional cultural center.

Colliding Rivers Viewpoint

At Colliding Rivers Viewpoint, the swift, deep waters of the North Umpqua River funnel into a water chute and meet the rapids of sparkling Little River head-on. The viewpoint includes a newly constructed rest area and comfort station, plus several interpretive panels about the area. Located just off Highway #138 at Glide, 18 miles east of Roseburg and across the street from Colliding Rivers Visitors Center. Continue your Self-Guided Scenic Tour following Highway #138 east to Crater Lake through some of the most spectacularly beautiful country in the Land of Umpqua.

Covered Bridges

Six covered bridges span rivers and creeks near the I-5 corridor in Douglas County. There are beautiful public parks to enjoy near many of the bridges, as well as Historic Districts in many nearby communities. The Land of Umpqua Self Guided Tour map will guide you to covered bridges along the North, South and East tour routes.

Diamond Lake

Diamond Lake, located off Highway 138 approximately 76 miles east of Roseburg, is Douglas County's Cascade Mountains Gem. Summer and winter outdoor recreation and adventure opportunites are some of the finest you will find anywhere in the county. Diamond Lake Resort provides motel and cabin accommodations. Camping sites abound. Restaurants and convention center year-round plus a Visitors Center open in the summer.

Douglas County Parks

The Douglas County Parks Department, the first in Oregon, has over 50 parks in the system, ranging from large facilities with overnight camping to small boat launcing access points. In addition, Douglas County is home to numerous parks operated by the U.S Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, the State of Oregon, and local communities.

Music on the Half Shell Concert Series

Musical greats of all kinds will be arriving in Roseburg throughout this summer to be a part of the 2006 Music On The Half Shell (MOTHS) concert series. The eight show concert series has grown to become one of the area's most popular events as word continues to spread throughout the northwest. Concerts are held Tuesdays form 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the bandshell in Stewart Park from mid June to mid August. Concert performers are announced in May.

Oregon's treasures unfold at the Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History (The Museum is open Monday - Friday 9:00 to 5:00, Saturday 10:00 to 5:00, and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00. The Lavola Bakken Library is open Monday through Friday 1:00 to 4:30.) where exciting exhibits portray the wonder of nature and our legendary past. See the tools native people used before Mt.
