It is the most accessible part of the North Cascades National Park Service Complex which also includes Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. Ross Lake NRA is the corridor for scenic Washington State Route 20, the North Cascades Highway, and includes three reservoirs: 12,000 acre (49 km²) Ross Lake, 910 acre (3.7 km²) Diablo Lake, and 210 acre (0.8 km²) Gorge Lake. These reservoirs serve as water gateways to remote areas of North Cascades National Park and the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Ringed by mountains, it offers many outdoor recreation opportunities along the upper reaches of the Skagit River, between the north and south units of North Cascades National Park.
