Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROU : Rougemont Castle
Rougemont Castle is a ruined castle in Exeter.
The castle was built in 1068 to help William the Conqueror maintain control over the city. It is perched on an ancient volcanic hill. The castle is named for the red stone found in the hill, and used in its construction.
Until 2003 the castle served as home to Exeter's Crown and County Courts. The buildings are now for sale, with bids rumoured to be in the area of £1.5m.
