Royal Hungary
Encyclopedia : R : RO : ROY : Royal Hungary
Royal Hungary was the official name of the territory of the former Kingdom of Hungary where the Habsburgs were able to secure their control and recognition as Kings of Hungary in the wake of the Ottoman victory at the Battle of Mohács and subsequent invasion of the country. It existed between c. 1541 and c. 1700.
It corresponded approximately (the borders were constantly changing) to:
- present-day Slovakia and adjacent Carpathian Ruthenia
- present-day Burgenland and parts of western Croatia
- adjacent parts of present-day Hungary, i.e. present-day Western Transdanubia, western present-day Central Transdanubia and eastern present-day Northern Hungary
Royal Hungary was part of the Habsburg Monarchy. It had its own Diet and own institutions (all of them directed directly from Vienna). The Habsburg kings were elected by the Diet and they should take on oath on the constitution of the Kingdom of Hungary at the coronation.
After the Habsburgs reconquered the rest of the traditional Kingdom of Hungary, the term Royal Hungary fell into disuse.
