Rude Awakening was the name of a morning music video show on MTV in the United States, circa 1995, hosted by John Sencio.

Rude Awakening is the name of a Los Angeles based heavy metal band. It was founded by bassist Robert Ryder and Drummer Joey Ballard in 1986. The band was formed in Richmond, Virginia and began in the area of Virginia Commonwealth University which was a burgeoning arts community which spawned many indy and alternative bands such as GWAR, The Good Guys, Skip Castro, The Dads, and the Alter-Natives. The band moved to Hollywood, California after touring the east coast and recording their first record "An Act Of God" in Fredricksburg, Virginia at Wally Cleaver's Recording Studio. The band attempted to retain the original members, but all but Ryder succumbed to defeat at the hands of the Hollywood scene. Singer Tony Taylor, and guitarist Tom Hirsch, were ultimately replaced by Vocalist Frankie Chance, guitarist Peter Volt, and drummer Kai Ballard. They joined Bassist Robert Ryder to record the band's second record "Wake Up And Smell The Pavement" in Hollywood. Eventually Volt was replaced by guitarist Jim Hill (who subsequently went on to record all the rest of the band's records) and Tiny Bubbles (Anthony Biuso) replaced Kai on drums. The band played hundreds of shows in the U.S. with this line-up and toured the U.S. on their "The World Is Our Toilet Paper" tour, ultimately resulting in Chance's dismissal from the band due to a no-show at a gig. He was replaced with vocalist Mike Place temporarily, and then ultimately Robert Gaston, and an additional guitarist Robert "Sage Vantara" Walpole was added (who was recently arrested on child molesting charges). The band then recorded their third record "Bent To Our Will" in Hollywood with engineer Dave Anthony. The group toured America again on the "Bent To Our Will Tour". Returning to Los Angeles the band replaced Vantara with guitarist John Goodwin and recorded the metal opus "Silent Cry" in Hollywood. Many shows followed, with much success critically. "Silent Cry" was eventually named one of the 50 best metal CDs of all time. Momentum shifted, and vocalist Gaston left to pursue solo interests. He was replaced by vocalise Mitch Urban and Goodwin replaced by Bill Sablan. The band then recorded "Headbutter" in Hollywood with Mike Simpson. This was a five song demo which was eventually fleshed out to include ten songs by producer Lee Popa. Popa also recorded the band's subsequent album "Scaring The Paper People" which was their most acclaimed album critically apart from "Silent Cry".

Rude Awakening is the name given by the late professional wrestler, "Ravishing" Rick Rude to his finisher, a neckbreaker.
