Rumenka

Rumenka (Serbian: Rumenka or Руменка, Hungarian: Piros, Croatian: Rumenka) is a village located in the Novi Sad municipality, in the South Bačka District of Serbia. It is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The village has a Serb ethnic majority and its population is 5,709 people.
History and culture
It was first mentioned in 1237. There are Serb Orthodox Church (from the 16th-17th century), Reformate Church (from 1836) and Parish house (from 1780) in the village.
Name
The story about origin of the name of Rumenka claim that in the early years of existence of the village, on the land were red flowers and seen from far away Rumenka was all red. Because of that, the place was called Piros ("Piros" means "red" in Hungarian, and the same meaning have Serbian name "Rumenka", which came from the word "rumen" meaning "red").
Features
Nearby Rumenka is situated Danube-Tisa-Danube channel. Although Rumenka is located near Novi Sad, the largest city in Vojvodina, main branch of industry in the village is farming.
