Ruptured spleen
Encyclopedia : R : RU : RUP : Ruptured spleen
A ruptured spleen (or "splenic rupture") is one of the more common injuries due to trauma of the abdomen. If the trauma merely weakens the spleen, the rupture may not present itself until several days after the event.
Though it is usually caused by trauma, not disease, a diseased spleen is more vulnerable to trauma. Occasionally, such as in malarial infections, a spleen can rupture without trauma.
It is usually treated with a splenectomy.
