Ruy Blas is a tragic drama by Victor Hugo. The action takes place in 17th century Spain during the reign of Charles II. Ruy Blas, a commoner, dares to love the Queen.
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, after reading (and hating) the play, was commissioned to write a concert overture, his Opus 95.
The 1971 movie La folie des grandeurs with Louis de Funès and Yves Montand is based on Ruy Blas.
