Ryan Mitchell
Encyclopedia : R : RY : RYA : Ryan Mitchell
Ryan Mitchell is a fictional character in the Power Rangers universe, appearing in the television series .
When Ryan was very young, he was involved in an accident along with his father, Captain Mitchell, and his sister, Dana, and all three were suspended over a cliff. Whereas Captain Mitchell had managed to secure himself and Dana, albeit until they could be rescued, Ryan surely would have plummeted to his death had the spirit of not appeared to Captain Mitchell and offered a deal. Diabolico would take the child, but in payment he would raise the child himself, and Captain Mitchell would never see him again. Captain Mitchell at first refused, but relented when Ryan began to fall. It was, as he has said, the hardest decision he had ever made.
Ryan was thus raised by the demon Diabolico, and taught that his father had rejected him, favoring Dana. Diabolico stole the prototype Titanium Morpher from the Lightspeed Base and gave it to Ryan, under the instruction that he was to destroy the other Power Rangers (including his sister Dana) with it. He nearly succeeded, until the truth finally came out and he rejected Diabolico.
After a while, Ryan left to find more information about the demons and how to defeat them.
Ryan is notable, in that he is the first Power Ranger in the history of the series that was created specially for the show, and not transferred over from the corresponding series of "Super Sentai" (Though some may argue that the original White Ranger was the first, since the Toei stock footage of Zyuranger had run out by this point, and there seemed to be no means of restoring the powers of the Green Ranger. Interestingly, a character named Ryan was originally intended to become the White Ranger in MMPR, however the concept was changed, with Tommy Oliver losing his Green Ranger powers permanently and becoming the White Ranger and new leader of the group. The Ryan character would be edited and revived on VR Troopers, another show featuring characters first seen in Japan from Toei. Some characteristics would make the crossover to the Power Rangers in the relationship between a villain in a series and his son.) Certain elements and even villains had been created before, usually with the intention of being used as merchandising material, but never a new Ranger. Producers presumably saw the opportunity when only five Rangers appeared in the original Sentai, and there had been six in most previous seasons.
The Titanium Ranger's design is noticeably designed differently from the original GoGoV uniforms used for the main 5 rangers. The uniform is clearly a reproduction of the suit design used in Kousoku Sentai Turboranger, with minor tweaks such as a Lightspeed belt, gloves and boots. The helmet is modeled after the Lightspeed helmet, meaning single colors and no mouthpiece, with a visor modeled after the V from the original sentai title.
Ryan's introduction into the series was full of plotholes, such as how he was able to grow into a functioning member of society while trapped in a demon's tomb, and why he was able to morph into the Titanium Ranger while the others could not.
