Founded in Miami, Florida in 1932 by James A. Ryder, the Ryder company began its business by hauling concrete. Within a few years, the business had expanded to leasing trucks for other companies and the company changed its focus from distribution to leasing. By 1939, the truck fleet had increased to 50. By the 1960s and '70s, Ryder had expanded into the distribution and supply chain markets, assisting other companies with the distribution management of their products effectively. Today, Ryder has divisions all over the world and employs around 25,000 people.
Ryder provides leading-edge transportation, logistics and supply chain management solutions worldwide. Ryder's product offerings range from full service leasing, commercial rental and programmed maintenance of vehicles to integrated services such as dedicated contract carriage and carrier management. Additionally, Ryder offers comprehensive supply chain solutions, consulting, lead logistics management services and e-Business solutions that support customers' entire supply chains, from inbound raw materials and parts through distribution and delivery of finished goods. Ryder gained worldwide noteriety when one of its trucks was used in the Oklahoma City Bombing on April 19, 1995. Following that terrorist attack, Ryder had its colors and logos changed to disassociate itself from the tragedy. One of its trucks is also famously known for carrying the ballots from West Palm Beach to Tallahassee, Florida during the disputed 2000 Presidential Election, the entire trip being nationally televised.
