Ryedale is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. It is traditionally been a safe Conservative seat although was briefly taken by Liberal Elizabeth Shields following a Parliamentary by-election on May 8th,1986 held following the death of MP John Spence.
In their current review of Parliamentary constituencies The Boundary Commission for England has recommended that the Ryedale constituency and its neighbour Vale of York be abolished.

Ryedale forms a new Thirsk and Malton constituency.
Boundaries
The constituency covers Ryedale (including Malton, Norton-on-Derwent, Helmsley and Pickering), Filey and the north eastern suburbs of York (including Huntington, Strensall, Osbaldwick and Heworth Without).Following its review of parliamentary representation of North Yorkshire, Ryedale is to be abolished, with electoral wards being used to form a new Thirsk and Malton seat.
History
The constituency was created in 1983 and was largely based on the previous Thirsk and Malton constituency. The constituency experienced boundary changes in 1997 when the areas surrounding Easingwold and the York suburbs of Haxby, Wigginton, New Earswick, Rawcliffe, Skelton and Clifton Without were transferred into the new Vale of York constituency. At the same time, Osbaldwick and Heworth Without were added to the Ryedale seat from the Selby constituency.Members of Parliament
