Encyclopedia : S : SN : SND : Sándor Kocsis

Sándor Kocsis (born September 21, 1929 in Budapest; died July 22, 1979) was a Hungarian football striker, who ranks fourth all-time with seventy - five international goals (in only sixty eight caps). He is not the top scorer for Hungary, as Ferenc Puskás scored eighty four. With his over-sized neck, Kocsis was nicknamed "Golden Head" for his aerial prowess.

Kocsis' international career spanned from 1948 to 1956. He led the 1954 World Cup in scoring with eleven goals as Hungary finished second. That number has only been topped once, by Just Fontaine, who scored thirteen in 1958. He also became the first player ever to achieve a hat trick twice in the World Cup. His record of seven hat-tricks in international matches stands.

Kocsis played most of his career in Budapest Honvéd FC, until he moved to Spain in 1956. He joined FC Barcelona in 1957. With Barcelona he went on to play in the European Cup 1960-61 final, where he scored, but lost to SL Benfica. He retired from football in 1966. He was diagnosed with leukemia and stomach cancer in 1974. He committed suicide in 1979 aged forty-nine.
