The Dobra is the currency of the West African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. It is divided into 100 cêntimos, and is abbreviated Db.
History
The dobra replaced the escudo in 1977 at par.
The first independent currency issue of São Tomé and Príncipe was made in 1976 and consisted of 20, 50 and 100 escudo banknotes overprinted in red with Banco National del St Thome e Principe.
A new issue designed to reflect the country and denominated in dobras was issued in 1977, with a second issue in 1982 and a third in 1989. Values for these banknotes were: 50, 100, 500, and 1000 dobras. The 500 and 1000 dobras were again issued for 1993. Banknotes of the current series were issued in 1996: 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, and 5,000 dobras. Coins of 2000, 1000, 500, 250, 100 dobras were issued in 1997, the 50 dobras was issued in 1990, and 20, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1 dobras and 50 cêntimos are all of the 1977 issue.
One of the features that are on each version of these bills before 1997 is a banana plantation on the 1,000 dobra bill, and on the back local flora with scenery of palm trees and the shoreline of the Atlantic.
