Sønderhald municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Aarhus County in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula (Djurs) in central Denmark. It covers an area of 138 km², and has a total population of 8.503 (2005). Its mayor is Kirsten Wyrtz, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The site of its municipal council is Auning. Other town in the municipality are Assentoft, Uggelhuse, and Øster Alling.

Neighboring municipalities are Midtdjurs and Rougsø to the east, Nørhald to the north, Randers to the west, and Hadsten and Rosenholms to the south. The municipality is partially bordered on the north by Grund Fjord and the Gudenå.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

By January 1, 2007 Sønderhald municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). The eastern part of the municipality will be combined with existing Nørre Djurs, Rougsø and Grenaa municipalities to form the new Norddjurs municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 661 km² and a total population of 34,382 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").

The remainder will be incorporated into an enlarged Randers municipality along with Randers, Nørhald, and Purhus municipalities, as well as parts of Mariager and Langå.
