S-Nitrosothiols are a group of organic sulfur-containing nitrites (alkyl thionitrites). S-Nitrosothiols include compounds such as:

• S-NITROSO-N-ACETYLPENICILLAMINE and
• S-NITROSOGLUTATHIONE.

These are produced by red blood cells when oxygen concentrations are low and cause an increase in ventilation rate.
