S.Parthasarathi Ayyanagr (1 May 1903 - 13 July 1983) was an Indian police officer and public servant.

Education

He studied up to 1915 in the Hindu High School, Triplicane ,Then St. Joseph's College, Thirchy. After graduation he studied at Madras Law Collage where he took his BL and Ml Degress and won several Gold Medals. Later Sri Parthasarathi joined as an apprentice under Sir Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer.

Police vareer

In 1926 he took the Prestigious Imerial Police Examination ( No IAS or IPS in those days). He Joined the Indian Police Service on 1 May 1927 and Posted to Thanjavur. He worked in various grades as SP, DIG, and later on became the Commissioner of Police, Madras. He had worked in the then entire Madras Presidency covering the parts of Orissa to South Canara and Kerala. He was Proficient in Telugu, Urdu besides English and Tamil.

As per the wishes of the late Sir C.P.Ramswamy Iyer the then Diwan of the old State of Travancore, Sri Parthasarahi was seconded to Travancore state as Inspector General of Police and worked from 1944 - 1947. At the time of Independence he opted back to Madras State declining an offer for service in the Commonwealth.

on 11 June 1953 he was appointed the Commissioner of Police of Madras City which he served for full three years. As a Commissioner of Police he was accessible even to the members of Lowest Strata of Society and took interest in solving their problems. He was always humane in his approach, applying Laws of Justice. He enjoyed a great reputation for Honesty and uprightness.

Other public service

In 1958 he was shifted to Delhi and was Appointed as I Inspector General of the Railway Protection Force which he organised from scratch. Alongside this he was the Director Anti Corruption - Railway Board and a part time member of the Union Public Service Commission.

Even though he could have continued beyond 1961 , he decided to return to Madras to Devote himself to social service. After retirement , he was involved in the following organisations:

All these activities kept him in good health. During this period, there was an offer of a Lok Sabha seat for the constituency of Mylapore made by a leading National Party member. He declined the offer as he was not interested in politics. He was fully occupied in helping people who approached him and had no interest in materialistic things in life say even a house of his own. He lived in a rented house.

During service he was decorated with the Kings Police Medal, as well as the Presidents Police Medal.

During his term as Commissioner of Police, he formed at his residence and hosted a forum called the Saturday Evening Club. The activities of the club were so varied that it helped the members of the club to develop their personality and pursue their intellectual pursuits. Mr.Parthasarathy Ayyangar also helped members of the Saturday Evening Club and others in informal sessions at his house to help them prepare for the Viva Voce (Interview) for the IAS/IPS. Several members of this group were successful in the competitive examinations and had subsequent distinguished careers in Government service. Sri Parthasarathi was active till the last moment and without pain/suffering died on the 13 July 1983 after reaching 80 years of Age. He has left beind a rich legacy to his Family and Society.
