S1C reactor
Encyclopedia : S : S1 : S1C : S1C reactor
The S1C (first submarine core by Combustion Engineering) reactor was built in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, as a prototype for a new class of submarines, the USS Tullibee (SSN-597), though that boat was in fact powered by an S2C reactor. The propulsion plant was unusual in that it is electric drive, rather than steam turbine.
The reactor was situated on land and known as S1C Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU). Except for its size and turbo-electric drive, the system layout was similar to the S5W reactor plants being used in most nuclear-powered submarines at the time. This was very beneficial to the graduates for their future qualification when they were assigned to their first nuclear-powered submarine.
The S1C plant at the Windsor site in Connecticut was shut down in March 1994, and defueling was completed in 1995.
