SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs is a third-person shooter video game developed by Zipper Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as an exclusive title for the PlayStation 2. It was released on August 27, 2002.

Overview

The player leads a four-man team (three AI-controlled) of U.S. Navy SEALs through four operations (each spanning three missions) in Alaska, Thailand, Congo, and Turkmenistan.

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs was one of the first PS2 games to use the console's network adapter for online multiplayer gaming. It was also one of the first to implement speech recognition via the PlayStation 2 headset, allowing the player to direct computer-controlled squad mates vocally.

SOCOM is an abbreviation for the U.S. Special Operations COMmand. The game includes many real-world weapons including the M4A1 and AK-47 assault rifles, as well as the M82 (rifle) sniper rifle. A wide variety of handguns, grenades, and other explosive devices are also featured.

Reaction

The game received mixed views from players. Although commanding squadmates via voice was a novel idea, the artificial intelligence for them was questionable at best. In the player community, for instance, the squad mate Boomer is known for moving without orders, making stealth difficult. Players are often forced to compensate for the erratic A.I. by playing "lone wolf."

The Franchise

was released in 2003, and included four additional operations and 10 multiplayer maps.

(2005) included solely original maps, although updated SOCOM II maps are slated to be released in March of 2006 for download and purchase[link].

was released for the Sony Playstation Portable.
is currently under development for the Playstation 2.
