SQ3R

SQ3R is a five-step reading strategy similar to PQRST and KWL. The name is an abbreviation of the five steps of the strategy: Survey (or Skim), Question, Read, Recite (or Recall) and Review.

  1. Survey the document. Skim through headlines, titles, etc.
  2. Ask yourself questions about what is it to be read.
  3. Read the text in detail.
  4. Recall what has been read.
  5. Review it by re-reading or discussing the text with others
This technique was introduced in 1946 by Francis Pleasant Robinson in his book, Effective Study.Robinson, Francis Pleasant. (1970) Effective study (4th ed.). New York: Harper & Row.
