SS Amerika

SS Amerika was an ocean liner built by the Belfast, Northern Ireland based Harland & Wolff shipyard for the German Hamburg-Amerika Line in 1905. She was one of the first ships to send an iceberg warning to the RMS Titanic in 1912. After World war I she was seized by American authorities, was renamed SS America and given to the United States Lines. In 1940 she was turned into an army accommodation ship and renamed the Edmund B. Alexander and would continue service until she was laid up in 1949 at Baltimore, Maryland. A couple of years later she was towed to the Hudson River where she remained until she was sold to Bethlehem Steel Corporation for scrap in 1957.
