It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Finland region. The municipality has a population of 10,205 (2003) and covers an area of 1,030.37 km² of which 142.97 km² is water. The population density is 11.5 inhabitants per km².
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Saarijärvi is the home of Bonden Paavo in the poem by Johan Ludvig Runeberg.
