Sadcore
Encyclopedia : S : SA : SAD : Sadcore
Sadcore/Slowcore is a subgenre of alternative rock that developed from the downbeat melodies and slower tempos of late 1980s indie rock.
Sadcore is a loose definition and does not describe a specific movement or scene. Many artists that have acquired the tag might better be classified as alternative country or as singer/songwriters. The term “sadcore” is a soft parody of the limiting scene or genre labels common in alternative rock such as hardcore and is sometimes used interchangeably with slowcore. In an [interview], Low rejected the label as "cheesy". Few artists have actually come forward to claim the genre as their own.
The term is most commonly used as a journalistic shorthand for music with bleak lyrical themes, slow tempos and minor-key melodies. Individual tracks range from minimal acoustic outings (e.g. Cat Power) to complex studio numbers, occasionally with pronounced elements of dissonance (e.g. Shannon Wright).
Earlier acts such as Red House Painters, and American Music Club drew on the nihilism, loneliness and isolation found in the lyrics of The Cure and The Smiths, and this is a commonly identified thematic characteristic.
