Safety Instrumented System

A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is an independent system composed of sensors, logic solvers (e.g. controllers), and final control elements for the purpose of taking the process to a safe state when pre-determined conditions are violated. International standard IEC 61511 was published in 2003 to provide guidance to end-users on the application of Safety Instrumented Systems in the process industries.
