Salad Days is a romantic shōnen manga created by Shinobu Inokuma, which is a collection of romance stories occurring in a high school/college setting.
Salad Days is different as compared to other mainstream manga which usually have plotlines relating to super heroes/super heroines, adventures or in contrary, mushy stories (shōjo manga) with a lot of big eyes and what the West says "ridiculous expressions" in toons. The stories in Salad Days seem to take a middle approach, in that the romantic stories are mainly aimed at guys. As such it comes under the shounen romance sub-genre.
In contrast to harem manga, in which the plot is based on a guy, surrounded by a lot of pretty girls (with a lot of ecchi touches), Salad Days seem to pick a neutral, normal way to tell how a boy and a girl fall in love - romantically, whether love at first sight, or love developing among friends, or any way you can imagine in your life of salad days.
Originally, the term salad days is said to have originated from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra of 1606, in the speech at the end of Act One in which Cleopatra is regretting her youthful dalliances with Julius Caesar: “My salad days, When I was green in judgment”.
Shinobu Inokuma also features this line in one of the stories, thus making it clear from where he took the title
