Saladdin Castle

Encyclopedia : S : SA : SAL : Saladdin Castle

Saladdin Castle is found 40km east of Lattakia, Syria, on high mountainous terrain, at the summit of a hill. The castle was built in ancient times, with the location known to the Phoenicians, who then surrendered it to Alexander the Great about 334 BC. In the tenth century the Byzantines gained control of it from the Aleppan Hamdanid dynasty, following which the castle was occupied by the Crusader Principality of Antioch. Many medieval features of the castle are still extant.
