Encyclopedia : S : SA : SAL : Salmond Hall, Otago
Salmond Hall is an independent hall of residence at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The hall is governed by The Council of Knox College and Salmond Hall, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. The hall was opened in 1971, originally to accommodate woman students, to parallel the male-only facility Knox College. It became a coeducational facility during the 1970s.
Salmond and Knox share different parts of the same 11 hectare landscaped site, located on the north side of the Dunedin Botanic Gardens, approximately 15 minutes walk from campus. The site was originally the location for stables for Glendinning and Ross Limited, and was donated by the Ross family.
The hall predominantly provides for first year students, plus a smaller number of second year students. A recent 2003 addition provides for a handful of postgraduate students.
The hall was named after James Salmond, a lecturer at Knox Theological Hall.
