San: Three Kingdoms Comic
Encyclopedia : S : SA : SAN : San: Three Kingdoms Comic
San: Three Kingdoms Comic is a webcomic by Peng Guo. He stated that the inspiration for his comic came from the webcomic Fallen by Aido. He started the project at 2003.
The webcomic is not updated on regular basis. There were two times that Peng lost inspiration and stopped drawing. However, soon after, due to popular demand or he got his inspiration back, he resumed the webcomic project. There was also a time where Peng decided to use his own original designs to continue on with the comic. However, he quickly reverted back to the Dynasty Warriors design.
Basic Plot
The comic mostly serves as a parody of the novel Romance of Three Kingdoms with various cameo and references thrown in occasionally Some include the appearance of Legolas from The Lord of the Rings, and a variation of the quote "May the force be with you." from Star Wars), as well as futuristic items, such as internet, laptop and sniper rifles. Peng drew the characters of the Three Kingdoms based on their appearances in Dynasty Warriors.
Just like the novel, character deaths are also present. However, most of the characters during their deaths were instead depicted as if playing on a movie and were sent to another nation for vacation (most notably Hawaii).
Notable characters that have appeared
Characters in the webcomic do not 100% follow their potrayal in the novel.
Shu Characters
- Liu Bei - While being portrayed as the usual virtuous guy, Liu Bei is infamous for starting the phenomenal trick called 'Baozi Fairy'.
- Guan Yu - Guan Yu was at first mistaken as a basketball player. It is later revealed that he is gay and is madly in love with Zhang Liao, much to his dismay, calling him 'Prince Wenyuan'.
- Zhang Fei - In the webcomic, Zhang Fei first stated that he wants to be called 'sister'. However, in the later strips, Peng referred him as 'brother'. It is later revealed that Liu Bei and Guan Yu had to beat him up to make him accept being called brother.
- Zhao Yun - He has only one appearance so far, saving Gongsun Zan. However, he's later revealed to be the cover boy of the magazine Playgirl.
- Ma Chao - He also appeared only once, but his face was never shown. He's noted for having excellent fighting skills as well as dancing beautifully.
Wei Characters
- Cao Cao - One of the most favored characters in the webcomic. Cao Cao is more known with his hat, which has a duckling on top of it, which will be soon called 'Duck Hat' (Peng credits 'Duck Hat' idea to [Wadatsumi Hodaka]). Cao Cao also strangely possessed a sniper rifle. There is a running joke about Cao Cao coming from the phrase "Cao Cao is sexy...". From there, some characters may just call members of the Cao family sexy, to appease Cao Cao.
- Xiahou Dun - In here, Xiahou Dun's eye was revealed to be shot by Legolas. Therefore, he held a grudge on him. He also made his own recipe of 'eye dumpling' and seemed to like it.
- Xiahou Yuan - He is a relatively minor character here, but Xiahou Yuan's most prominent role was during the search for Xiahou Dun's new eyepatch. In the quest, he goes on cosplaying The Terminator, Sailor Moon and a pirate. Him cosplaying Sailor Moon made Peng create a wallpaper based on it, it's called 'Pretty Horseman Seaman Sun' and consists of the Wei generals cosplaying as Sailor Moon characters (Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus), along with Cao Ren as Artemis, Cao Pi as Luna, and Zhen Ji as Tuxedo Mask.
- Dian Wei - He has a shiny bald head. In addition of that, he usually dons only red shorts and attacks with an RFD, acronym of Rescue Floating Device (a reference to Baywatch). He also claims to have a CPR certificate.
- Xu Chu - He is quite a minor character here. In order to recruit him, Dian Wei had to use Guo Jia's Baozi Hat.
- Zhang Liao - He is the unwilling love interest of Guan Yu's gayness. Zhang Liao always attempted to avoid him, but could never get away. There was one occassion that he hung himself committing suicide. But in the next chapter he later returned alive and well.
- Xu Huang - He first joined the Yellow Turban Rebellion, gaining a 'Yellow' Turban (which is in fact his turban combined with pee). But he is later seen usually with his white turban. He also possesses a digital camera, and happens to know Jang Geum.
- Zhen Ji - She has yet to appear in the actual comic, but she seemed to harbor a crush on Cao Ren.
- Cao Ren - He is portrayed as a fan of Hello Kitty (on his vest was a picture of Hello Kitty), as well as the resident black sheep of Wei, being blamed for things he didn't commit. A running joke is that he's always taken away to be castrated (along with saying "Let me goooooo... I'm still virgin."), but he never got castrated. It's revealed that in fact he wears unlimited underwear.
- Cao Pi - He also has yet to appear in the actual comic. Interestingly, during his first appearance, he's drawn like a Cao Cao Jr, which is like a smaller Cao Cao with mustache and another Duck Hat. It's currently unknown if Peng will draw him in his Dynasty Warriors 5 attire.
- Guo Jia - He sports the Baozi Hat instead of Duck Hat, and sunglasses. When Cao Cao hypnotized various officers to join him, Guo Jia was unaffected used his hat to hypnotize Cao Cao in turn.
Wu Characters
- Sun Jian - During his first appearance, he looked normal. But on his next appearances, Sun Jian is always seen to wear a chubby tiger outfit made by Sun Shang Xiang. He's also the current character that really stays dead instead of going to another country.
- Sun Ce - In the beginning, Sun Ce's age was very questionable. His later appearance was the duel with Taishi Ci, which ended as both of them stripping and doing some boys love chemistry. He later donned Sun Jian's tiger costume. Also, he enjoyed watching Brokeback Mountain with Zhou Yu.
- Huang Gai - He has only one appearance so far, handing the Imperial Seal to Liu Biao. However, he's most noted for being butt-naked all the time.
- Taishi Ci - He's known for constantly changing his weapons, from popsicles to shish kebabs to rulers. He's hinted to be gay along with Sun Ce.
- Zhou Yu - He also didn't appear in the main comic, but he's first seen enjoying Brokeback Mountain with Sun Ce, annoying Cao Cao greatly.
- Gan Ning - He has also yet to appear in the main comic. He's first seen selling pirated CDs of Brokeback Mountain in mainland China.
Other Characters
- Diao Chan - She was in fact the girl who mistook Guan Yu as a basketball player. She's known to have an affair with Lu Bu, but Guan Yu ordered his weaponsmith to kill her. Recently, she returned, but claimed herself as 'Diao Chan of the Japanese version'.
- Lu Bu - He gained the services of Legolas, as well as having a collection of porno books. Along with Diao Chan, he's an avid eater of McDonald's, especially the French Fries. Unknown to him, his halberd is alive.
- Dong Zhuo - While also evil, in the webcomic, he's quite humorous. He likes to play with children in daycare. He's later killed in a similar fashion to Julius Caesar, muttering "Et tu Lu Bu".
- Yuan Shao - He is still portrayed as the usual snob noble. In one of the comic strips, he taught Chinese Gestures.
- Zhang Jiao - Starts the Yellow Turban Rebellion by giving free Yellow Turbans. He also gained the services of Xu Huang by peeing his turban yellow. For a certain reason, his group is often referred as Falun Gong.
- Red Hare - Lu Bu's steed, which is in fact a giant red bunny with an emblem of hammer and sickle on its body. At first he's known to be a violent rabbit, punching on Liu Bei and Cao Cao. When it was given to Guan Yu, it got a little soft.
- Mother Dong - The mother of Dong Zhuo. For unknown reasons, she possessed great martial arts skills, and she can defeat Lu Bu easily. She got a heart attack when fighting Ma Chao, but returned to antagonize Lu Bu, thanks to Guo Jia's plot.
