Sanaag (Somali: Sanaag; Arabic: Sanāgh) is the largest of the 6 regions (gobolka) that make the Republic of Somaliland, an unrecognized state in the territory of Somalia. The region has a long coastline facing the Gulf of Aden to the North. It has borders with Saaxil to the West, Togdheer to the Southwest, Sool to the South, and Somalia's Puntland Region to the East.
Erigavo (Ceerigabo), is the administrative capital of Sanaag, and has a population estimation of just over 100,000. The city, at an altitude of over 1,800 m above the sea level, is the mildest in Somaliland.
The country's road networks are generally poor, however, Sanaag is exceptional, there are no paved roads serving this vast region which covers about a quarter of Somaliland.
