Sandy & Junior, sister and brother, Sandy Leah Lima (1983 - ) and Durval de Lima Junior (1984 - ) are a Brazilian singing duo. They released their first CD in 1991.
Junior Lima is an instrumentalist and produces their CD's, he is also the drummer of the black music band SoulFunk.
Frequently Sandy & Junior refute rumors which say that they are going to break up.
Notably, they have sales of 100,000 copies of the home video "Era Uma Vez - Ao Vivo" (1998) and 2,700,000 copies of the CD "Quatro Estações - O Show" (2000).
They had a Sunday TV show "Sandy & Junior" between 1999 and 2003, a soap opera "Estrela Guia" (Guiding Star) in 2001 and the movie "Acquaria" (2003). They had a part in the movie "O Noviço Rebelde" in 1997.
Career
Children of Xororó, of the highly succeful duo in the 80s 'Chitãozinho e Xororó', they released their first CD in 1991 when Sandy was 7 and Junior was 6. The CD was full of country songs and had the hit 'Maria Chiquinha', a funny song that is still played more than 12 years since the release.Their music changed to kids tunes, remakes of popular songs (What a Feeling; You're the One That I Want) and finally to romantic pop rock, the style that would shoot them to stardom.
They had a very strong kids and teens fanbase.
They sold their first million with the CD 'Era uma Vez... Ao Vivo' in 1998. The CD had their live show at the Olympia, in São Paulo, it included many of their hits.
In 1999 they released the CD 'As Quatro Estações'. The CD was the best-selling album of the year and it included some of their biggest hits like the upbeat and highly succeful 'Vamos Pular' (Let's Jump). The CD included two songs written by Sandy herself and the first Junior solo song. To promote their CD, they did a tour that was the most successful and expensive of the year.
They reached their peak in 2000 when they released the live version of 'As Quatro Estações'. It sold more than the original and it was the best-selling CD of the duo, selling almost 3 million copies. They also did a concert on Rock in Rio, on the same day as Britney Spears and *NSYNC.
Since then, their carrers started to decline, but none of their CDs flopped as every one of them received, at least, a golden certification.
In 2001, they released their CD 'Sandy & Junior'. The CD was their first CD not to sell over a million copies (it sold 800,000). The CD would be called '11', because it was their 11th, but because of 9/11 and because 11 is similar to two towers, the name changed. Sandy wrote lots of songs on this album and Junior arranged some musics.
They tried an international career in 2001, with the CD 'Sandy & Junior' (it was called Sandy & Junior - Internacional in Brazil) with songs penned by Diane Warren. But their international career didn't take off but the CD sold 300.000 copies in Brazil, a lot for an international CD. They finished the year with a concert on Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, the world biggest stadium (capacity: 120,000). The stage was put in the middle of the field, so only 50,000 tickets were put on sale, still a high number. They were the first national act to do a concert in Maracanã (Xuxa did it, but the concert was free). The Maracanã concert was their 3rd concert to become a DVD and a CD.
In 2003 they released the CD 'Identidade'. The CD sold less than 500,000 copies but it was still considered a hit. Junior helped to produce every single song on the album and he was also the tour director (he also helped to direct every concert, starting with the Maracanã one and both were creative directors since 1999).
Since then, both of them started to do solo projects.
Junior is a drummer of the band SoulFunk. He is an acclaimed instrumentalist and works as producer.
Sandy is also an acclaimed solo singer but she doesn't plan to release a solo album. She did concerts singing jazz and blues and recorded some solo tracks, for movies and soap opera soundtracks.
They still appear in TV shows together and they still do some concerts together in big venue, but much less than before because they don't have any new CD to promote.
Their next CD will be out in January 2006 and they'll be comemorating 15 years of career with a closed show in December 2005.
Acting Career
Their first television show was the 'Sandy & Junior Show' on the Brazilian network Manchete. This was not a hit, and they then went to a show on the number one Brazilian network, Rede Globo, in 1999. Their contract forbid them to appear on TV shows of other channels. At Rede Globo they did a teenager- and kid-oriented comedy showing them at their school called 'Sandy & Junior'.In 2001, Sandy did her first starring role on the soap opera 'Estrela Guia'. The soap was successful and critics acclaimed her acting. Junior also acted in the soap in a recurring role. The series was taped at Campinas, a city in São Paulo where they live, but the soap opera was taped at Rio de Janeiro. Because of that conflict, the last season of the 'Sandy & Junior' series had them living at Rio de Janeiro to attend college.
The last episode of 'Sandy & Junior' aired in 2002 and in the same year they released their first movie, Acquaria, which was a box-office flop.
In 2003 they didn't renew their contracts with Globo and they promoted their CD 'Identidade' on other channels as well. In 2004, they did renew their contract and made plans for an end-of-year special and a new show, but this never happened.
Sandy and Junior are still on Rede Globo and have some projects in development.
Personal Life
Since telling a magazine that she had never kissed (she was 15 years old in 1998) and that she planned to get married still a virgin, Sandy's virginity was a hot topic in gossip magazines, and her pure image was often questioned.Sandy was always considered a charismatic and smart girl, but she was severely criticized by the press. She had health problems because of stress when she was only 16 and her personal life was always on magazine covers, dealing with secret and nonsecret boyfriends, fights with her family, and her pristine image.
Her pristine image was more talked when she was voted the sexiest woman at the VIP magazine annual poll in 1999, but she didn't agree to do the sexy photoshoot. In 2000, she did the cover of the fitness magazine 'Boa Saude' wearing a top and a mini-skirt, when the usual outifit for the stars on the cover of the mag is a bikini. In a 1998 interview she told Contigo! magazine that she didn't kiss her boyfriend in front of her parents. Since 2000, Sandy has tried to break that image by not talking about her personal life. She also did an interview for Contigo! in 2005 in which she said she had never done drugs but had nothing against marijuana. She also did a sexy photo shoot for Vogue RG and was photographed traveling alone with her boyfriend and kissing him.
She had two serious relationship, with Lucas Lima (when she was 16) and with the actor Paulo Vilhena (when she was 17). She possibly had some unconfirmed affairs with a music producer and a director and then she came back to her first boyfriend, Lucas Lima, and she is still with him. She doesn't talk about her virginity anymore but the press imagines that she lost it when she was 18, at which time she stopped talking about the subject.
There were also rumors of fights in the family (because they didn't want her to publicly date in 2002 and because they didn't want her to move in with her boyfriend in 2004 (?!)) and rumors of silicone too at the end of 2004 which she denied.
Since the beginning of 2005, Sandy is a student in the Languages course at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica, in Campinas, where she tries to be a normal student, despite having bodyguards and groups of her fans always at the gates of the university's building waiting to meet her.
Junior is considered by the press and the people who work with him to be a nice, charismatic, down-to-earth guy. His life is not so public as Sandy's life is, though he has had some affairs and is currently dating a fashion journalist. He also made the covers of gossip magazines at 15 when he lost his virginity, and his frequent affairs since his appearances without Sandy are always seen on the gossip TV programs and magazines.
