Sarcastic fringehead

Encyclopedia : S : SA : SAR : Sarcastic fringehead

Sarcastic fringeheads (Neoclinus blanchardi) are fishes of the suborder Blenioidea. They can be up to thirty centimeters in length and are the largest fish in the suborder. Their geographic range is from San Francisco, California to central Baja California, Mexico, and their depth range is from 3 to 73 m"[Neoclinus blanchardi]." FishBase. Ed. Ranier Froese and Daniel Pauly. February 2006 version. N.p.: FishBase, 2006.. Blennoids are mostly scaleless fish with large pectoral fins and reduced pelvic fins. With highly compressed bodies, some may be so elongate as to appear eel-like. They prefer to hide inside various objects or crevices (see picture). After the female spawns under a rock or in clam burrows the male guards the eggs.

For more information, refer to the blennoid family, Chaenopsidae.
