Schola Cantorum

Encyclopedia : S : SC : SCH : Schola Cantorum

This article is about the Parisian musical institute. For the medieval papal choir, see Schola cantorum.
La Schola Cantorum is an independent music teaching institute in Paris founded in 1894 by Charles Bordes, Alexandre Guilmant and Vincent d'Indy as an alternative to the Paris Conservatoire. La Schola opened on 15 October 1896; since 1900 it has been located in a converted convent in the Latin Quarter.

Alexandre Guilmant, an organist at the Paris Conservatoire, worked as the director before D'Indy himself took over. He set the curriculum and built the early foundations for the success the school has enjoyed to the present day.

Background

In the later half of the 19th century, the Paris Conservatoire had degenerated into a training school connected exclusively with opera. The situation had developed such that the only image of a vocal musician was an opera singer, and composer had become synonymous with operatic composer. D'Indy's teacher César Franck, an innovative composer, was not accepted by the Paris musical establishment, particularly the operatic composers who taught at the Conservatoire, perhaps because he composed mainly instrumental music.
