The Scooby Gang, or "Scoobies", are the names given to Buffy Summers and her friends and colleagues who assist her in her duties as slayer in the cult television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer usually after they discover the existence of vampires and demons. The first appearance of the term is in season two's "What's My Line?, Part 1", as spoken by Xander Harris. The name is a clear reference to the group of ghost-hunting teenagers from Scooby-Doo. The line-up of the group varied from year to year but the core remained intact throughout the programme's run. This core consisted of Buffy herself; and her best friends, Willow and Xander. Most argue Giles, Buffy's watcher to be the fourth member, and he is widely accepted as being so, despite his absence from the majority of season six.
Ironically, Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress who plays Buffy on the show, has also appeared in the films Scooby Doo (film) and .
The term is also used in the television series House by Hugh Laurie's character to refer to his team in the second season episode "Humpty Dumpty".
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer's sister-show Angel one of the many titles for the core group of characters is the similar name of The Fang Gang. Angel Investigations is also used.
