Screw compressor

Encyclopedia : S : SC : SCR : Screw compressor

A screw compressor is a rotary type positive displacement gas compressor where the operation is done by helically grooved rotor or rotors. Air compressors raise atmospheric pressure to a higher pressure, by changing mechanical energy into gas energy. This can be done in two ways. Either by positive displacement of gas or by dynamic action.

There are two different types of screw compressors - oil free or dry type and oil injected or wet type. The characteristics and design of each are so different that, they are in effect, entirely different compressors, however, they both use exactly the same principles of operation. The term is now generally applied to twin screw compressors and the word 'twin' is usually omitted.
