Scriba is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 7,331 at the 2000 census. The town is named after landowner George Scriba.

The Town of Scriba is east of the City of Oswego. The town was created in 1811 from the Town of Volney, then known as the Town of Fredericksburg.

The town of Scriba includes an Oswego County fire department, a municipal building, highway department, justice center, buildings and grounds department and a water department as well as a child care center, recreation center, town park and sunset bay park with a boat launch.

The Town of Scriba has no post office so therefore it has no zipcode. All locations within Scriba excluding some residences in the hamlet of Lycoming (located within the town) have an Oswego mailing address and most people in the town identity themselves as from Oswego.

Geography

The town borders Lake Ontario, the City of Oswego, and the Oswego River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 113.6 km² (43.9 mi²). 105.1 km² (40.6 mi²) of it is land and 8.5 km² (3.3 mi²) of it (7.50%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,331 people, 2,721 households, and 1,937 families residing in the town. The population density was 69.8/km² (180.7/mi²). There were 3,053 housing units at an average density of 29.1/km² (75.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.19% White, 0.38% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.83% of the population.

There were 2,721 households out of which 38.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 20.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 105.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $39,550, and the median income for a family was $44,304. Males had a median income of $35,974 versus $25,329 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,939. About 10.6% of families and 14.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 2.3% of those age 65 or over.
