Sea World is a marine park on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Founded in 1958 as the Surfers Paradise Ski Gardens, the attraction was moved down the coast to a 64-hectare site on Southport Spit, and in 1972 received its present name, reflecting expansion into animal exhibition. In 2004, the park opened "Shark Bay", a system of artificial lagoons, and the largest shark lagoon in the world, for the keeping and viewing of sharks .
Wildlife attractions include dolphins (at "Dophin Cove"), as well as seals and sea lions, pelicans and Australia's tiny Little Blue Penguins (which are also known as Fairy Penguins). Little Blue Penguins (Fairy Penguins) are the smallest penguins in the world.
Sea World also has Polar bears at "Polar Bear Shores". The original polar bears were "Ping Ping" (a male polar bear who was on loan to Sea World from Beijing Zoo, China), and "Kanook" (a female polar bear who had been brought to Sea World from Tuscon, Arizona, United States. "Kanook" later unfortunately died after suffering a long illness – following which Beijing Zoo took "Ping Ping" back again). At present (2006), there are four polar bears at "Polar Bear Shores" — twin polar bears ("Lia" and "Lutik") from St. Petersburg, Russia, and twin orphan polar bear cubs ("Hudson" and "Nelson") from Northern-Quebec, Canada (Australia was originally only to get one of the Canadian twin bear cubs, with the other twin going to Japan, but the twins a very strong sibling bond and could not be separated because of this, so Australia was able to keep both "Hudson" and "Nelson" at Sea World).
Sea World's many attractions include a Bermuda Triangle, Corkscrew and Cartoon beach, plus a water park. Sea World is also the only theme park in Australia with an associated resort/hotel - Sea World Nara Resort. The resort is linked to the park by a large monorail.
Sea World has commercial links to Warner Bros. Movie World and Wet'n'Wild Water World, two other popular theme parks on the Gold Coast. Heavily discounted '3 Park Super Passes' are available to lure customers into visiting these three parks on their trip to the Gold Coast. The 3 parks are dwarfed by Dreamworld, which has no commercial relation to the other three parks. Sea World, Movie World and Wet n Wild are all Warner Village Theme Parks and include varying partnership arrangements between Warner Bros., Village Roadshow, and may also include the Seaworld Property Trust.
