Sean Matsuda is a character from Capcom's Street Fighter III fighting game series. He is Ken's student, but was easily beaten by him in the third World Warrior tournament. Despite direction from Ken, he failed to defeat Ryu.

Story

The events of how Sean became Ken's student are somewhat unclear, but what is known is that Sean's main reason for entering the third World Warrior tournament was to prove to Ken that he had become a much greater student then he had been the previous year, while training with Ken. Although skilled in his fighting style, Sean lacked the discipline and experience to make it too far as a fighter in the U.S. championship tournament, being knocked out in the preliminaries. Despite this, he kept his big dreams of one day winning a tournament of his own, even turning down Ken's offer of the U.S. trophy, claiming he wanted to earn his own one day.

Despite the loss at the tournament, Sean continues to train with Ken, and it's possible he's also training alongside Ken's son, Mel. It is likely Sean is familiar with Ken's son, as well as his wife, Eliza, and could very well be staying at their home for training purposes. Considering the wealth of Ken's family, this is not unlikely.

Sean is often referred to as the "Dan" of Street Fighter III since they both use modified versions of Ryu & Ken's traditional Ansatsuken techniques. However, this comparison is questionable, as Dan is an intentionally ineffective joke character, whereas Sean is considered difficult to use, but can still be an effective character.

Sean was very powerful in 2nd Impact, but many of his moves, most notably his anti-air uppercut, were toned down in effectiveness to promote gameplay balance in 3rd Strike.

Techniques

Sean Tackle - Just as the name implies, Sean dives towards his opponent, taking them down around the waist, then while pinning them under his weight, he delivers two devastating hooks to the face. The EX version has Sean doing four hooks followed by a hammer punch.
Dragon Smash - Sean's version of the Shoryuken, where he uppercuts an opponent into the air followed by a flying punch which knocks the opponent back to the ground. It becomes a two-fisted uppercut in 3rd Strike.
Tornado - A variation of the Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku with a much slower startup and recovery time.
Ryuubi Kyaku - Sean throws his entire body onto the opponent legs first. Ken borrows this move in Capcom vs. SNK 2.
Zenten - Sean's version of Ken's roll. It is quite quick and is a good evasive maneuver.
Basketball Throw - Sean's Personal Action (or taunt) will cause him to jump and throw a basketball, which allows for him to have a projectile attack. If there's already a basketball on the screen, Sean will yelp instead of throwing anything. His taunt also causes his attacks to do more stun damage.
Hadou Burst - Sean's variation of the Hadoken is his first Super Art. The impact causes an outward explosion of ki that can throw the victim a few yards, and leave them with a numb sensation, but a warm feeling throughout the body.
Shoryu Cannon - As the name implies, it's Sean's variation of Ken's Shōryū Reppa, and although Sean has no flaming ki, or the strength to knockout an opponent with a single strike of this attack, it attacks with a single common Shōryūken attack, followed by a chain of unrelenting uppercuts.
Hyper Tornado - An autocombo that starts out like the Sean Tackle, but does an auto-combo ending in a multi-hitting Ryuubi Kyaku if it connects.

Trivia

Sean was supposed to be the only Ansatsuken character in the Street Fighter III series, but due to their large fan following, Capcom realized that Ryu and Ken had to be there as well.
Sean was not taught in the traditional Ansatsuken style, meaning he did not have a second student to compete against during his training. This may be one of the reasons his level of skill is not on par with that of Ken. Sean, Dan and Sakura all had singular training in their Ansatsuken, thus leading them all to be a tier or more below Ken, Ryu and Akuma.
There's indication that he mixes some Brazilian Jujitsu with the Ansatsuken; compared to Dan, who seems to mix Muay Thai with the basics of Ansatsuken he learned.
Despite the fact that he and Dan have never officially met in battle, Sean has a win quote in the original Street Fighter III where he says "Don't call me Dan!", implying that he hates it when people compare him to Dan. In the same game, he has another win quote: "Rule #1: Never give up! Rule #2: Don't fight me! Rule #3: Don't be like Dan!"
Sean is the only character repesenting Street Fighter III in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. His only appearance there is in Marvel vs. Capcom, where he can be seen along with Ken in Ryu's intro, as well as his ending.
Sean has been voiced by Isshin Chiba.
