Second Sea Lord

Encyclopedia : S : SE : SEC : Second Sea Lord

The Second Sea Lord is one of the senior admirals of the Royal Navy, and is the admiral responsible for personnel in the Royal Navy.

The Second Sea Lord was formerly the second most senior naval member of the Board of Admiralty, but is now considered to be junior to both the First Sea Lord and the Commander-in-Chief Fleet.

Since 1994, the Second Sea Lord has also held the position of Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command, and is known by the abbreviations 2SL/CNH or CINCNAVHOME. As CINCNAVHOME he is responsible for naval training and reserve establishments in the United Kingdom, and his flagship is HMS Victory, the world's oldest commissioned warship, which is preserved in dry dock in Portsmouth. The Naval Home Command was formed in 1969 with the amalgamation of the former Commands at Portsmouth and Plymouth.

The current Second Sea Lord is Vice-Admiral Adrian Johns CBE (appointed October 2005).
