Secret Chiefs 3

Encyclopedia : S : SE : SEC : Secret Chiefs 3

''This article is about a band called Secret Chiefs 3; for the use of the term in occultism, see Secret Chiefs.
The Secret Chiefs 3 are a revolving band hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. Led by former Mr. Bungle guitarist Trey Spruance, the Secret Chiefs 3 perform a wide range of musical styles including surf rock, Persian, death metal, cinemaesque themes, and various others. The band formed in the mid-nineties with members Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, and Danny Heifetz. Since then the Secret Chiefs 3 have had revolving musicians on each of their albums, including former members from Mr. Bungle and Estradasphere, as well as musicians William Winant and Eyvind Kang, among others.

There are continuing theological and philisophical themes running through the band's history. The visual presentation of the albums relies heavily on icons and symbols related to these ideas.

The Secret Chiefs 3 are currently a constellation of seven planets (otherwise known as "bands"), which are set to release 45rpm singles and full-length albums of their own, as well as contributing to overarching releases by the mother band, Secret Chiefs 3. The seven bands are The Electromagnetic Azoth, UR, Ishraqiyun, Traditionalists, Holy Vehm, FORMS, and a mysterious, possibly non-existing seventh band. As the planets revolve around the sun, so will the bands be illuminated to a higher or a lesser degree in accordance with their position and location in the sky. Thus, the extent to which each band will manifest itself on the Secret Chiefs 3 releases is determined by the intensity of the light received.
