Secret Square was an early side project of Apples in Stereo drummer and vocalist Hilarie Sidney. The duo comprised of Sidney and Lisa Janssen, who played bass on the Neutral Milk Hotel album On Avery Island. They had two releases, both self-titled, under the Elephant Six banner.

Releases

Secret Square was the first release, a 7" vinyl single in 1995.

Secret Square was also the name of their second release and first full-length album. A lo-fi affair with songs written by Sidney and Janssen, it consisted of 7 original songs and four demos at the end of the album. The release went largely unnoticed, with Sidney being quoted on the Elephant Six message board that "not a lot of people have" heard it. [link] Those that had heard it critically, however, were not positive, as the album receives 1.5 stars out of five at All Music Guide, noting that "there's a fine line between "artless" and "incompetent," and sadly, parts of Secret Square fall on the wrong side."[link]
