History
The '2B' is an annual competition, its first season being 1977-78, at which time it only had two groups. The second two groups arrived ten years later, for the 1987-88 season, and the league continues to contain these four groups, labelled as the letters A,B,C and D. It is divided in four regional groups.- Group 1
- *Teams of Madrid, Galicia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and Melilla.
- Group 2
- *Teams of Cantabria, Euskadi, La Rioja, Castile and Leon and Asturias.
- Group 3
- *Teams of Catalonia, Navarre, Land of Valencia and Aragon.
- Group 4
- *Teams of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castile La Mancha, Ceuta and Murcia.
Competition System
Each group contains 20 teams, who play each other on a home and away basis. All games are played over 90 minutes, with the regular system of 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.Promotion
The top four teams in each group (i.e. sixteen teams in total) enter a system of playoffs to determine which four teams will replace the four teams relegated from the Segunda División. The major exception to this rule is if a B team wins promotion and its affiliated A team is already in the 2nd Division. This rule also applies of promotion from the 2nd Division.Relegation
The bottom four teams in each league are relegated. An exception to this is if a B team is already in the '2B', and its affiliated A team is relegated from the 2nd Division. In this case, the B team is relegated, due to a rule which exists so as to avoid having two teams which are owned by the same company (i.e. an A team and a B team). This rule also applies to relegation from the 2nd division. The teams in 16th position plays two's of permanence.
