List of Serb clans.

The breakdown of state society following the competing incursions of Ottoman, Venetian and Ragusan occupiers into the Dinaric range of Herzegovina, Montenegro, the Highlands (Brda), Boka Kotorska and Zeta saw the surge and organization of life into tribal society.

A modern version of the clan system has survived to this day mostly in present-day Montenegro (including both Old Montenegro, Herzegovina, the Highlands, Boka and the Coastland), where familial lineages are often held in predominance over random mate choosing and familial societies run towns and counties.

There are two types of clans, territorial and lineage ones. The first are made up of several groups of non-related smaller clans (made up of several families or bratstva). Lineage clans are dispersed throughout several non-adjacent regions and make up for an over-extended family which traces its roots to one male ancestor and does not intermarry considering each member of the extended family as a relative. Exogamy is practiced and strictly followed up to as many ancestors as can be traced or according to lineage tribal belonging.
