Serratus anterior muscle
Encyclopedia : S : SE : SER : Serratus anterior muscle
The Serratus anterior muscle runs from the surface of the upper nine ribs at the side of the chest to the anterior aspect along the entire length of the medial border of the scapula.
Originates from the upper outer surface of ribs 1-8; inserts onto the vertebral border of the scapula.
Function
Pulls scapula forward.(protraction) draws medial border of scapula away from vertebrae (upward rotation).
It also protracts the scapula - if the nerve is damaged, for example during lymph node clearance from the axilla during breast surgery, the scapula 'wings'; that is, it sticks out from the posterior chest like an angel's wing, most noticeable when pushing against objects.
