In the United States, it refers to a filling station that also offers such services as oil change and mechanical repairs to automobiles.
In the United Kingdom, it refers to much larger facilities, usually attached to motorways or major trunk routes, which provide food outlets, large parking areas, and shops — see rest area.
In Canada, both of the above are meanings associated with service station.
In Australia, it refers to any filling station.
