Seven News

Encyclopedia : S : SE : SEV : Seven News

Seven News (promoted on-air as 7NEWS) is the name of the television news service of Australia's Seven Network. Its flagship bulletin is broadcast at 6:00pm every night, with a separate bulletin for each of the five metropolitan markets. The Seven Network also produces a number of bulletins aired in regional Queensland under the name Seven Local News. Seven News is in direct competition with rival Channel Nine's National Nine News to which it traditionally rated second.

However recent years have signalled a change in audience patterns and Seven News is now the top rating news service nationally. Sunrise, Seven Morning News, Seven's 4:30 News regulary win their relevant timeslots. As of the start of 2006, the 6:00pm bulletins in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne regularly won their timeslots. However recently, National Nine News in Sydney and Melbourne have started to challenge Seven News in the 6:00pm timeslot. The result has meant little change to both ratings and news services. As of week 25 in The Australian Television Ratings year, Melbourne is the only capital city where National Nine News rates higher than Seven News, earning it the right to the title 'Melbourne’s Number 1.'

The Seven News theme music is derived from John Williams' composition The Mission, which is used as the theme music for NBC Nightly News in the United States.

In recent years under new guidance, Seven News has taken a noticeably more local/community feel which is paying dividends in ratings as key markets such as Sydney and Melbourne are broadcasting more locally-focussed content. An example of this is the Seven Listens campaign where small one-person studios have been installed at Westfield Shopping Centres for everyday people to discuss issues. This has developed into distribution of material such as seen right with surveys also able to be completed online. Data collected from these surveys contribute to 'Special Reports' which are stories devoted to issues that would otherwise not be brought up or would only gain small attention through other news.

During the 2003 Invasion of Iraq Seven introduced an afternoon news bulletin hosted by David Johnston. The bulletin, Target Iraq, covered news from the war. The bulletin is shown across Australia, and is the second highest rating national bulletin, second only to Ten's Late News. Previously, the bulletin was presented from the Seven Broadcast Centre in Melbourne by Rebecca Maddern, although on 3 July 2006, the bulletin moved to the network's News Centre at Martin Place studios in Sydney, presented by Mike Amor.
