Severstal
Encyclopedia : S : SE : SEV : Severstal
Severstal (Russian: Северсталь, literally: "northern steel") is a Russian company mainly operating in the steel industry, centred in the northern city of Cherepovets. As such it is the second largest steel company in Russia, behind Evraz Group. The company is owned by Alexei Mordashov. As of May 2006 it is part of a possible merger with Arcelor. If this merger succeeds it will become the largest steel company in the world. Severstal gives its name to an ice hockey club, Severstal Cherepovets. The Arcelor deal seems to have been called off following intense criticism within the arcelor board and the board uninanimously agreeing on a merger with Mittal Steel on 25th June 2006 which also marks the end of the long hostile takeover bid by mittal Steel.
