A sex show is a form of pornographic performance, where the customers pay to see live persons in the nude or perform sexual activity.
The format of a sex show is often controlled by local law and licensing restrictions. In many parts of the US a club cannot serve alcohol if the performers are completely nude.
Peep show
A sex show whose performers are behind a barrier is called a peep show. Each member of the audience has their own window or peephole, usually from within a private cubicle, thus permitting the customer to masturbate. Visibility through the window or peephole is often restricted by a coin-operated timer mechanism.
"What the Butler Saw" machines operated on the same principle but showed short movies; they were also called peep shows.
The Lusty Lady peep show in San Francisco entered the news in 1997, when it became the first U.S. sex business to become unionized. In 2003 it was bought by the strippers and became a worker cooperative.
Live sex show
A live sex show includes at least one act in which the performers engage in unsimulated penetrative sex. Some peep shows occasionally show live sex acts, mainly in Europe. There are no legal live sex shows in the United States.
Some live sex shows such as the Casa Rosso in de Wallen, Amsterdam or the Safari on the Reeperbahn, Hamburg present professionally choreographed routines, mostly to tourists. 20% of the audience on a typical night is female.
Live sex acts sometimes include limited audience participation such as inviting a member of the audience to touch the performer or insert a dildo. Intercourse with audience members is rare. "Honban manaita" (for real, chopping board) sex shows offering this type of act were popular in Japan during the 1980s but these were never legal and have since been completely shut down by the authorities.
There are numerous online live sex show websites where visitors connect with performers via webcams.
