Seymour Hicks (30 January 1871 - 6 April 1949) was a British actor and music hall performer. He was the first British actor to perform in France during both World War I and World War II, and received the Croix de Guerre twice for his services. His great specialty was the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, which he played onstage for the first time in 1901. He eventually played it thousands of times onstage and twice on film - the first time, in a silent version. His 1935 film "Scrooge", produced in England, is the first feature-length film version of the story with sound. While vividly atmospheric, it suffers from the fact that most of the ghosts in the film are heard, but not seen, including Marley's ghost. The only ghost who makes a full-blown appearance onscreen is the Ghost of Christmas Present, played by Oscar Asche. Donald Calthrop portrays Bob Cratchit. Maurice Evans has a bit part in the film, as one of Scrooge's debtors.

For years, the 1935 "Scrooge" remained completely unseen, due to the popularity of the 1938 and the 1951 film versions of Dickens' novel. When it finally resurfaced on cable in the 1980's, it was in almost unwatchable, worn-out prints. It has lately been completely restored and issued on DVD.
