|} Sgt. Frog, known in Japan as , is a manga and anime series created by Mine Yoshizaki.
A comedy, it is published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten, serialized in the magazine Shonen Ace, and published in English by TOKYOPOP. The anime is produced by Sunrise, has aired on TV Tokyo since April 2004, and is currently at 120 episodes. In addition, around August of 2005 it was announced that a "Keroro Gunsō" theatrical movie was to be directed by Junichi Sato, produced by Sunrise, and set for release summer of 2006. A second movie has been announced for spring of 2007. The English manga releases amount to 12 volumes in total.
Plot
Sgt. Frog features a frog-like alien invader named Keroro who winds up on Earth in the care of two siblings after he is caught by them, Fuyuki Hinata and his older sister Natsumi Hinata. Keroro spends most of his time plotting the takeover of the planet Earth and subjugating its citizens (known as Pekopon and Pekoponjins by the Kerons, respectively) while trying to escape from the Hinata family. Keroro is easily sidetracked or distracted, and several episodes show him browsing the Internet or building Gundam scale model kits (aka Gunpla). The series takes its comedy from a combination of wordplay (puns, homophones), jokes about sexuality, physical humor, cultural references, and situational humor.
Characters
Keroro Platoon
- The erstwhile leader and eternal antihero of the series, Keroro is usually pretty easygoing, but can be charismatic, resourceful, and even manipulative if he believes it will serve his interests. Although Keroro is clever and implied to have been a very good soldier in the past, he is typically ruled by his hobbies (especially Gundam models, aka Gunpla), easy to emotionally cow, and distracted by pretty much everything. He's typically the butt of the series' humor, usually after taking advantage of his Earthling hosts or his other squad members (though often enough through simple bad luck). If surrounded by enough humidity, his physical and mental strength increase drastically. He often ends his sentences with 'de arimasu', a formal term for 'it is' or 'let it be so'. The name "Keroro" comes from the Japanese word for the sound a frog makes, kerokero.
- The platoon's combat specialist, the series' straight man, and often Kururu's guinea pig. Giroro is a grizzled veteran, and is often at odds with Keroro and Kururu for their unmilitary demeanor and lack of dedication to the invasion. He has a fierce temper that sometimes drives him into "combat mode", where he fiercely attacks the enemy, speaking in only simple words and ignoring all other orders. However, he has a soft spot for Natsumi Hinata, and eventually acquires a pet cat. His love for Natsumi sometimes gets in the way of invasion operations, almost as much as Keroro's short attention span. Giroro lives in a tent, concealed from busybodies by Keronian technology, in the backyard of the Hinata household. His name derives from the Japanese word girogiro, which is an adjective describing sharp-looking eyes.
- Tamama is the youngest, least experienced member of the platoon. This is represented in two ways
- The platoon's intelligence officer. Though technically superior in rank to Keroro, he defers to him on most issues (usually because Keroro is supplying the funding for his bizarre experiments). He is thoroughly unmilitary, and as such is on very poor terms with Giroro. Out of the five, he's considered the least popular because of his gloomy and inquisitive nature, which leads him to play elaborate pranks on those around him. He's also an inventor, though many of his devices are designed with what Keroro calls a 'kinky role-play effect' in mind (such as the age-changing rays from manga chapters 23 and 24, and the "oni-girl" gun from chapter 31). Despite his unmotivated attitude and resistance to advice, he has a weakness for Angol Moa, sometimes seeing her as a source of income, though uncomfortable at being stared at by her. Many of the things that happen in the series revolve around some crazy invention he has come up with. His name Kululu derives from the Japanese word kurukuru, which means "spinning". Also, Kululu is a hunchback, which is kuru in Japanese. He also has a codename(the numbers 9-6-6), because 9-6-6 is "ku-ru-ru" when pronounced separately. He also tends to laugh "Ku, Ku, Ku" when he gets the upper hand on someone, when the tables are turned on him, when he's being mysterious, or when he's just being a jerk. Most people tend to spell his name Kururu since its prounces that, but actaully is spelled with l instead of an r since Japanese Grammar makes an l sound like an r.
- The quiet one. Originally called Zeroro, he is always calm, and never loses his temper. He follows the way of the ninja (along with his "owner", the kunoichi Koyuki), as he is the top assassin in the entire Keronian Army, and is an avid nature lover, and thus, he always objects to plans that would damage Earth's eco-system. He also never kills a living thing; he always uses the back of his sword to strike his opponents, so as not to harm them. He first met Koyuki when he got caught in a kappa trap she made. Dororo's name change may be linked to the fact that the forest Koyuki found him in has the same name. He is often forgotten by the rest of the squad, which usually results in his Trauma Switch turning on and causing him to burst into tears. He's known Keroro and Giroro since they were little, and though they were "friends", Keroro took advantage of Dororo more often than not. He often ends his sentences with 'de gozaru'. His name derives from dororo, which is a Japanese onomatopoeia of disappearing like a ninja. In addition, the Japanese word dorodoro means syrupy, which is his image of crying in trauma. (It should be noted that there is an anime about ninja called Dororo).
Human
- Fuyuki is a 12-year old boy who captures Keroro and keeps him in his house. Fuyuki is a fan of the paranormal, including aliens and UFOs, so naturally he's delighted to have a real alien living in his home. He is average in academics and sports, somewhat naive and absent-minded, and doesn't know how to swim, but Fuyuki is considered a genius in the field of paranormal studies. He is also quite the detective and can be very cunning when he's trying to crack a case. Despite Sgt. Keroro's repeated attempts to conquer the Earth, Fuyuki develops something resembling a friendship with Keroro as the series progresses. If the sergeant goes too far in an invasion scheme, Fuyuki will get so mad that the manga will not even show his face when he gets this way. This anger is more than enough to make Keroro change his mind on invasion. The name Fuyuki means "winter tree", and "winter" is written on his room's door in English.
- Natsumi is Fuyuki Hinata's 14-year old big sister. She is smart and athletic, but also emotional, and somewhat overprotective of her brother; in grade school, Natsumi's fierce temper earned her the nickname "Devil Summer". Natsumi is frequently suspicious of the aliens, and pushes Keroro around whenever she can. She also has a huge one-sided crush on Mutsumi Saburo and she listens to his radio show any time she can. Her three measurements (in cm) are 80-56-80, her birthday is December 2nd, and she has a deep fear of slugs. The name Natsumi means "summer beauty", and "summer" is written on her bedroom door in English.
- Fuyuki and Natsumi's stunningly beautiful single mother. Aki is a manga editor who decided to base the main character of her latest manga on Keroro. She is also a black belt Aikido master, and the strongest member of the Hinata family. She's surprised (and a bit disappointed) by how "normal" Keroro's lifestyle on Earth is. Her three measurements (in cm) are 92-60-86, and she has a strange attraction to things that are sticky and moist. Her name, Aki, means "autumn" in Japanese.Humorously, she was mentally pictured by Natsumi and Fuyuki as Eva Unit One going Beserk (a reference to what Eva Unit one actually is) when she was first mentioned in the manga.
- A 12-year old multi-billionaire (she is the only child of the head of the Nishizawa zaibatsu) who has a huge crush on Fuyuki. She is the "owner" of Tamama, and like him she appears very cute and innocent, but has a manipulative and violent side. She puts much of her vast fortune into her romantic pursuit of Fuyuki, with only limited success. Her name derives from momo, the Japanese word for peach. The ka derives from a different reading of hana, the Japanese word for flower.
- Momoka's butler and sometime-bodyguard. He is fiercely protective of his mistress, and willing to do anything for Momoka, from helping with her efforts to win over Fuyuki to risking his life for hers. As a war veteran, he has a rather strong feeling of camraderie with the Keronian invaders (especially Giroro), whom he sees as fellow soldiers.
- Classmate of Natsumi. A poet/artist/philosopher who skips class a lot. He has his own radio show which Natsumi listens to. His partner is Sergeant Major Kururu (Kururu Sōchō), who gave him a pen that allows him to draw anything and make it appear. Saburo first met the Sergent Major when the keronian tried to stike off on his own, and turn the students of Saburo's school into his servants. The reason that the two get along so well is because they share the same wave length. Saburo is a genius, who got a perfect score of 300 out of 300 on an I.Q. test, and is excellent at sports as well. He has a hard time fitting in with his classmates (especially the male ones) because of this. Although Mutsumi is extremely clever and observant, he seems unaware of Natsumi's crush on him. Mutsumi also makes a few appearances in the anime series Seven of Seven. His nickname comes from a form of Japanese number wordplay.
- A 14-year old kunoichi who is the partner of Dororo and the one who introduced him to the ways of the ninja. Koyuki is an incredibly talented fighter (she beat Momoka Nishizawa, who was wearing the latest in Nishizawa group battle suit technology in addition to her impressive beserker skills, in a fight over a ticket to a hot spring trip) who came from her hidden ninja village in the country with Dororo to help him find the rest of his squad. She attends the same school as Fuyuki, Natsumi, and Momoka (although she continues to wear her old school uniform). Koyuki has a very large crush on Natsumi that she in no way attempts to hide, causing Giroro to be very jealous. The azumaya part of Koyuki's name is read as "eastern cottage" and the koyuki is read as "snow child".
Other aliens
- Nyororo
- A gelatinous alien resembling a hybrid of newt and snake, with a forked tongue, bulbous eyes and a a tentacle-ringed opening on its tail for absorbing moisture from Keronians. After draining their mositure, it quickly leaves. Keroro has a deep fear of Nyororos because of his own high susceptibility to humidity, and he ends up drained by them more than a few times in the anime.
- As predicted by Nostradamus, Angolmois comes down from the sky on July 1999 to destroy the Earth, under orders from her father, the "Lord/King of Terror"; fortunately, Keroro and the Hinata family talked her out of it. Moa turns out to be ditzy and a bit insecure, though in the manga this personality was apparently partly caused by a blow to the head (refered to as Kakkarot Syndrome). Her species specializes in destroying planets using seemingly magical items, in her case a moon-tipped staff called the Lucifer Spear (which she can conceal as a cell phone in the anime). In the anime, to make up for the time between the manga and the anime adaptation, she arrived 500 years early, decided to take a nap in orbit, and ended up being 5 years late. Moa, a family friend of Keroro, calls Keroro ojiisama (roughly, "Uncle"), and has a crush on him, which sometimes earns her the jealous ire of Tamama. She often ends her sentences with common idioms, preceding them with the phrase "you could say ...". Her transformation sequences, stylized costume, and related accessories may make her a parody of the 'magical girl' genre.
- Yuri-chan
- A kimono-wearing ghost who inhabits the Hinata household's basement, and later Keroro's room. She was imprisoned there several hundred years ago after helping a Keronian (which she calls a Kappa) escape from an anrgy mob. her name means 'lily'. Normally contend to sit and observe, she occasionally helps out Keroro's platoon when other ghosts are involved.
- Sumomo
- A pink Keronian-like alien, Sumomo was a character in a one-shot side story in the manga, but in the anime she's a highly popular idol singer with a few recurring roles. Her species, the Axtotl (a play on the amphibian group that includes newts and salamanders) are able to change forms from a Keronian-sized one to a human-sized version via rapid thyroxin secretion. In episode 12 of the anime, she visits Earth to take a rest from her hectic touring, and later moves there.
- 3M
- An alien TV host in episode 11 of the anime, with a black robe and an onion-shaped helmet. An imposter regularly mentions ratings factors, in centimeters.
- R Grey
- An alien TV host in episode 11 of the anime, resembling the grey-headed, almond-eyed alien species known as the Greys.
- Mr. G
- The cameraman for the Alien TV Duo sent to visit Earth.
- Poyon
- A dedicated but somewhat clumsy member of the Cosmic Space Police, she first appears in episode 11 to arrest two alien TV host imposters and makes later appearances to stop certain unusual crimes that Keroro's platoon commits, such as illegal space warping, and illegal planet creation. She ends her sentences in 'poyon'.
- Poyan
- Another member of the Cosmic Space Police, albeit with short grey hair and a much more serious attitude. She ends her sentences in 'poya'.
- Viper
- A cobra-headed nemesis of the Keroro Platoon, with a blaster over his left hand and a cigar. Brash and forceful, he delights in capturing and humiliating Keroro's team, as his species are their natural enemies. Viper kidnapped Dororo and Koyuki in hopes of luring the rest of the platoon, and defeating them. His plan backfired when the team unleashed a team attack in retaliation. In the anime, Viper tries to get his revenge by kidnapping the whole platoon except Dororo. He then trapped Dororo by using his own truama switch against him. On one occasion, Dororo and Viper had to temporaraly team up to save their mothers from computer controled space train gone haywire. His design and name are most likely a pun off the name and title character of Space Adventure Cobra.
- The Sergeant's Father
- The sergeant's father first appears in volume 2. He was a mentor to Keroro and taught him much, including a sergeant's way of life, a sergeant's pride, a sergeant's know-how, a sergeant's military discount, a sergeant's dancing technique, a sergeant's keen fashion sense, and a sergeant's secret to dieting success. Fuyuki's enthusiasm is dampened slightly when he hears the last four. His spike-tipped helmet resembles a German pre-WWI design.
- One of Keroro's best friends, Kogoro is a space detective. However, he is virtually unemployed and depends on small amounts of money, which his sister Rabi earns through part-time jobs. His hobby is collecting colored boxes and utilising them in various ways.
- Giroro's big brother. He, much like Giroro, is a straight man and follows military rules strictly. Unlike Giroro, he does not fire his weapons in barrages; instead, he is the best sniper in the whole army, with a devistating one-shot-one-kill style. He appeared in volume 10 of the Keroro manga with his team to replace Keroro's (not too successful) team (He also appeared in a flashback in volume 7.) He also shot down Giroro in battle. His name is taken from garuru, the Japanese word for a growl.
- Tamama's "apprentice". During his days as a cadet, he came to visit Tamama, and wound up causing trouble by revealing how Tamama had bragged about being the real brains of the squad, and what Tamama really thought of his comrades. Taruru eventually joined the army, and became part of Garuru's team. In volume 10 he defeated Tamama (and has adult Keronian features which Tamama doesn't have) and put shame onto his master. He ranks higher than Tamama, fueling Tamama's already existing jealously of Taruru. He is put back in his place as a student by Tamama when he aquires lent strength by a 'Legendary Super Rhinoceros Beetle'. His techniques are "Taruru Genocide" and "Taruru Genocide EX".
- A fellow ninja and previous comrade/rival of Corporal Dororo. The left side of his body is robotic thanks to a long-ago feud with Dororo, and seeks revenge for this incident. He disappears when Dororo tells him that he forgot who he was.
- The same rank as Tamama now. He is a young hacker who used to try to outhack Kururu back in military school, but failed every time. he was recruited after basically disabling the Keron Force by hacking into their networks. He was able to beat Kururu in hacking, but was put in his place when Kururu realized that he was using a poorly copied hacking system that he made eons ago, and hacked it. In the anime, Kururu sent every available mech he had ever made, and sent them to attack Tororo's computer room. He also has about the same personality as Kururu, including his pervertedness. His defining characteristic is his constant consumption of junk food.
- Tadpole Sergeant
- The sergeant as a child. He first appeared in volume 7. During Garuru's invasion, a cloned tadpole Keroro with none of the sergents memories, or any sympathy for earth was made to replace the original's spot as leader of the invasion. The original contained in a devolution chamber that was to reduce him back to an egg to be reeducated and drained of memories and personality. Keroro escaped the chamber just as he was made into a child. After the invasion, the two Keroros fought over who would keep the spot of leader until an agreement was made, and Keroro returned to being the leader.
- Tadpole Giroro
- Giroro as a child. He first appeared in volume 7. He has his skull emblem on his belly. Giroro also lacks the scar he has on his eye in adulthood.
- Tadpole Zeroro (Dororo)
- Dororo as a child, long before his name change. He first appeared in volume 7.
- Tadpole Kururu
- Kururu as a child. He first appeared in volume 11. He has earmuffs instead of headphones in his childhood.
- Kiruru
- An ancient Keronian war weapon accidentally activated by Keroro in the 1st theatrical movie. Resembling a white Keronian with a blue cross on its forehead, it attacks by replicating itself, or growing to vast size and using its flexible, paper-like limbs to attack, similar to Zeruel from Evangelion.
- Mirara
- A pink Keronian with a red circle on her forehead, she helps Keroro to stop Kiruru.

Trivia
- In chapter 42 of the Sgt. Frog manga, one of the effects in Keroro's special game of sugoroku ("parcheesi" in the English version) turns Natsumi into seven duplicates of herself, which is captioned in the Japanese version with Shichi-nin no Natsumi, a reference to the anime/manga 7 of Seven (Shichi-nin no Nana 七人のナナ), which Mine Yoshizaki had a hand in. In the anime version of 7 of Seven Mutsumi Hojo ("623") appears as a central plot character for several episodes as "Examinee 623", and is even the host of his own radio program like in Sgt. Frog. In episode 89, Giroro undergoes a similar seven personality split.
- Kogoro ("556") is a tribute to Ooba Kenji, the actor who played the role of Space Sheriff Gavan, the first Metal Hero of the Toei Tokusatsu Metal Hero genre. His sister Rabi is a tribute to Morinaga Naomi, who played Annie from the third metal hero series Space Sheriff Shaider. GaoGaiGar fans also know him as the voice of the main chracter, Guy.
- Poyon's gun says SPD which is a homage to Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (SPD in Dekaranger stands for Special Police Dekaranger.)
- Various anime, games, manga, and other aspects of pop culture are parodied/referenced throughout the series. These include Monster, Gundam, DragonBall Z, Evangelion, Street Fighter, Ranma 1/2, Saturday Night Fever, Spirited Away, Animal Crossing, Gunbuster, Robocop, Urusei Yatsura, sentai and tokusatsu, Saikano, The Terminator, Midori no Hibi, Alice in Wonderland, Pikmin, Doraemon, Jurassic Park, Space Adventure Cobra, Gyakuten Saiban (aka Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney), Sailor Moon, Initial D, Titanic, Castle of Cagliostro, Cutey Honey, Mushiking, Dokonjo Gaeru, Peter Pan, Iron Chef, Marilyn Monroe, Aim for the Ace!, Ultraman, Darkstalkers, Mazinger Z, VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire, Arcade Gamer Fukubi, 7 of Seven, etc. (Interestingly enough, Mine Yoshizaki was the mangaka for VS Knight Lamune & 40 Fire and Arcade Gamer Fubuki.)
- There seems to be a few similarities between the plot of Keroro and the American show Invader Zim in that both stars a short, green invader armed with advanced technology but a somewhat limited amount of intelligence which prevents domination of the planet Earth. Whereas Keroro befriends the Hinata family and seems to have some respect for humans, though, Zim has an absolute hatred of humanity. Also, the ambience is considerably more "depressing" on Invader Zim when compared to Sergeant Keroro. Whether Jhonen Vasquez or Mine Yoshizaki is aware of the other's work is unknown. However, since the Keroro Gunso manga began in April 1999 while Invader Zim was first broadcast in March of 2001 there's some chance Vasquez may have been influenced by Yoshizaki.
Controversies
- In Korea, some bloggers with anti-Japanese attitude were demanding Korean TV station to shut down the Keroro series, as they were arguing that the animation promotes militaristic imperialism among young children. Some of their points were that the yellow hats of Keronians were worn by Japanese soldiers during the World War II and the opening song of the second arc was displaying "Kyokujitsu-ki" (Japanese War Banner). However, most Koreans agree that this is an overreaction, as all of Sgt. Frog's military invasion plans fail humourously (often miserably) and this can be viewed as ridiculing the obsolete imperialism in the context of the modern Japan. Rather, Sgt. Frog is promoting the concept of friendship, fairness and goodness.
